30 Days Wild 2019 – Day Five.

Day 5: Today is World Environment Day. A day when people are inspired to do something for the planet, either locally, nationally or globally. 2019’s theme is air pollution. You can help #BeatAirPollution by taking the bus to work, or walk or cycle. Turn your engine off when stationary, reduce meat consumption or switching lights and electronics off when not in use.

I shall of course be taking the bus and walking to work. How about you?

In conjunction with World Environment Day, Friends of the Earth, have a campaign to double UK tree cover. Trees help slow climate change by absorbing harmful Co2 and are also home to many animal species. I’ve been debating whether to buy a sapling for the yarden but I am not sure how it would fare in a pot? The Woodland Trust have a good selection of UK species to chose from.

What do you think, should I buy a tree? If so what type?

Earth Hour:
Last night I observed the annual Earth Hour by WWF. For the past seven years I have joined in this world wide movement by turning off my lights between 8.30pm and 9.30pm. Did you take part in the initiative?

Book I’m reading:
I’ve picked up Winter by Ali Smith. Have you read this book? What were your thoughts?

Flowers:
Inspired by the lovely Sharon from Sunshine and Celandines, who shared pictures of wild flowers she had seen on a recent dog walk. I decided to do the same and take some snaps of the flowers I see on my walk to work.

New Friends:
On Tuesday David surprised me with two more friends for the aviary. Helen a female owl finch and Rize a female Lady Gouldian finch. How beautiful are they?

30 Days Wild 2018 – Day Eight

Day 8: It’s Friday! The focus of today is to ID a plant.

On the 30 Days Wild Facebook page, here. There was some debate as to whether a plant was the deadly nightshade or the woody nightshade (bittersweet). I had noticed a purple flower among the wild roses whilst on my walk to work and thought I would take a closer look.

The plant in question has purple flowers with a yellow stamen. The leaves are a broad heart shape.

There is much confusion online about this plant. However a few informative videos on YouTube helped me identify the plant as the less harmful woody nightshade or bittersweet.

Apparently the flowers and berries of the deadly nightshade are completely different to the bittersweet. I doubt it would be wise to attempt to eat either plant’s berries.
